netTrekker - the trusted search engine for schools

Tip of the Month

We hope that the 2005 school year has been exciting and enjoyable for you as well as for your staff and students. As you begin preparing for your summer break here are some things that you may want to consider regarding your use of netTrekker.

School & District Usage Stats
This is a great time to review your school's or district's usage information. If you are a netTrekker administrator, you will have an admin tools link associated with your username.

  • The admin tools link is located in the yellow toolbox on the right side of your netTrekker page.

  • The first section of the admin tools is the district and school usage reports page. This is where netTrekker provides information on the number of search pages that your school or district has viewed. These usage statistics are updated nightly and capture current usage as well as cumulative usage for the school year.

  • At the beginning of August, netTrekker will clear out the usage information and begin tracking for the next school year. Please make sure that you review your usage and print copies of this usage before August 1.

  • If you have any questions about the admin tools or usage statistics, please contact netTrekker customer support at 1-877-517-1125 (toll free).

Saved Searches
The saved search and shared search folders are a great way for you to share your resources with other teachers or students at your school. Throughout the school year you may have created several saved searches as well as shared folders. Summer break is a great time to clear out any of your unwanted saved searches and folders that you may have created throughout the year. For help with saved searches, please click here.*

Usernames and Passwords for Summer Access
To access the great resources in netTrekker from home, a username and password are required.

  • Make sure that your staff and students either have netTrekker usernames and passwords (can be a universal login) or know how they can create one for themselves through the online registration process. For netTrekker registration instructions, please click here.

  • Many schools utilize IP authentication for school access. For home access a username and password are required.

  • You may want to attach the sample parent letter* (found in netTrekker help section under Customer Resource Center) to a final report card, and include netTrekker login instructions. If your school is sharing a universal login, include that information in the letter.

Summer Review Materials
Many students will spend time this summer getting ready for the new school year. Help them take advantage of the great learning exercises and learning games that are available in netTrekker. You can create a summer review shared search folder for students with websites that have great review materials. Students may log into netTrekker from home to access the review folder you’ve set up for them.

Summer Reading Lists
You may want to include a summer reading list for your students. You can print the summer reading lists or save them for your students to access in a shared search folder.

  • Just type “summer reading list” in the keyword box in netTrekker. There are summer reading lists available for both elementary and secondary levels.

  • There are also additional types of reading and visual literacy resources that are located in the Language Arts section of netTrekker. Some of the topics include reading comprehension, critical thinking, and reading strategies. If you need any assistance with saving searches or creating folders, please click here.*
